Incident: British Airways B744 near Tamanrasset on Feb 27th 2011, engine shut down in flight

A British Airways Boeing 747-400, registration G-CIVZ performing flight BA-74 (dep Feb 26th) from Lagos (Nigeria) to London Heathrow,EN (UK) with 301 passengers and 16 crew, was enroute near Tamamrasset (Algeria) when the crew needed to shut an engine (RB211) down. The aircraft diverted to Tamanrasset for a safe landing.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration G-CIVJ carrying a maintenance crew and spare parts was dispatched to Tamanrasset and continued flight BA-74 reaching London with a delay of 19 hours.

The airport said the engine was shut down due to a bleed air valve fault.

British Airways said the aircraft experienced a minor technical fault.

The maintenance team repaired the incident aircraft which was able to ferry to London shortly afterwards and landed in London as flight BA-9175 about 5 minutes past the replacement aircraft.
